  1. Thanks for the tunes folks. Very inspiring. Started my Sufi path with Pir Vilayat in Amsterdam and went on to work the Chamonix (FR) camps and eventually to live at the Abode N.Y. , U.S.A.
Some of the selections are from people i have had the good fortune to hang out with…Saki, Zuleika and Hu Dost.

  2. 👍🏼✔️Don’t know how I found this but I’m sure glad I did. I went to Google to find how to spell and lyrics for “MISHEBERACH” and I found so much more.
📌I’m singing by zoom tonight but soon it will be in-person. I can’t screw this up. I am not Jewish … yet. An example of Buddhist overcompensation.

  5. We recently submitted a new single to Sacred Music Radio by Canadian singer songwriter DOM MAR KZ entitled SACRED HEART
It’s a powerful poignant and evocative song that was composed and orchestrated to be shared with a message of peace, hope and renewal.
In the week it was released across the province, the US, and abroad, it was played and reviewed in Canada, Scotland, South Africa, and the U.K;. with interview requests, one of which will air shortly.
This song was written by an artist whose faith brought him to his knees to embrace a WILL to surrender. What he found in doing so, was that he no longer had to be at the helm of his journey to follow his passion. “Everything just fell into place” – without questioning. SACRED HEART is destined to find its way and inspire those who hear it.

  6. You could definitely see your skills within the article you write.

The world hopes for more passionate writers like you who are not afraid
to mention how they believe. Always follow your heart.

  7. It is indeed lovely to have discovered your site.
Currently I am listening to SMR2.
I am looking forward to supporting the musicians via purchase of an album or two. To be perfectly frank I am finding it a bit of a task to negogiate the SMR site in terms of sampling different tracks and albums with a view to purchase. No doubt I will mange it though.
Thanks for a beautiful concept and creation.

  12. Est ce des musiques sacrées de Zoroastre?
    Merci pour votre réponse.

Je cherche des Radio spécifiques sur la musique Zoroastrienne.
    Merci

    1. Esteve,
Thank you so much for your email. Sorry my French is not so good but I hope you can translate my English. So few people appreciate the profound effect “Zoroastrienne” has had on the religion of our planet. What music would you suggest we play? Can you send us some music? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for taking so long to reply. Thank you, Vakil.

  13. Hi..
I’ve just found you radio station and love it. Thank you so much. I plan to support with a donation ( :
I have a quick question.. I’ve noticed there is a choice of SMR 1 and SMR 2. Could you tell me the difference please?
    Best Wishes
    George

    1. Hi George,

Many thanks for your kind words and donation.

SMR 1 plays from a vast selection of sacred music from around the world. SMR 2 draws on a much more limited selection of more well known music. Regards Vakil

  14. Thank you so much, Vakil, for Sacred Music Radio. So many times I’ve been
browsing the Internet in mental turmoil, and this service has brought peace
to my soul, re-orienting me to beauty and harmony as expressed through many
traditions and cultures. May the good you do return to you a hundredfold.

  15. Featuring not only the sacred music of the church long familiar to lovers of art music in the West, Sacred Music Radio helps to make known the richness of the musical traditions of the world’s major faiths. In so doing, Sacred Music Radio performs a valuable service for those who appreciate sacred music, not only as beautiful works of art, but as ways of drawing near to the One who has loved us into existence.

  19. How wonderful that this is available. How kind you are to provide this for us. Many thanks, Dear Vaquil. Stephen and I remember well all the good work you did in recording the wonderful words of Pir when we attended his seminars so long ago. It is good to know you are sill there sending out this beauty and joy. Love and Blessings, Tasha Basira

  20. I was going to give you money until suddenly, like the brash voices of kids running into the living room screaming, I heard “COMMENT – ON OUR TWITTER AND FACEBOOK SITE etc.”
I am not saying you meant it to be brash. It quite simply is much louder than any of the music (as radio people, if you are, you should know that perceived loudness differs from peak loudness by mathematical measures which are easy to obtain on the net), and aside from that, the intent of it is quite simply advertising, which is contradictory to the intent of all bonafide spiritual music.
The Buddha told his monks to go from house to house with their bowls, but: it was an absolute rule that they must say nothing at all. (they also must not choose which houses to pause in front of, but must go to each house on the street sequentially).
I’m stopping listening to your stream now because of the pollution.

    1. Sorry this comment offended you. Words can have that effect and at Sacred Music Radio we use very few. Our Twitter and Facebook sites are to spread the message of “Peace Through Music”. As I am sure you are aware the world can be offensive to all of us. I try and rarely succeed in remaining detached where necessary. To quote from the Sufi teacher Hazrat Inayat Khan “The sea of life is in constant motion, no one can stop its ever-moving waves. The Master walks over the waves, the wise man swims in the water”.

Sorry you will stop listening but maybe if you are so moved in the future you will listen again.

      Vakil

  23. Listening to SMR since the very beginning, I am full of gratitude for this enormous, inspiring, holesome expression of the multitude of hearable beauty on our planet. I love, that amoungst the tracks is only very scarcley one, were people simply perform, but many, with palpable joy and devotion of the musicians! SACRED in its best sense!
    Thank you!

And also a big compliment for the website, that is so much more menagable and rich, than in the beginning. I can also sense the joy of the makers in here. How beautiful!

  25. Questions from Sacred Music Radio to Katie Rose.
    1. What inspired you to get into music originally?
I always sang, as a child – just as many children do. Luckily I had a musical family so I was encouraged. There were also many permutations of Christianity in my family and so I grew up singing in churches and around the piano at Christmas time.
    2. What have been the best or most rewarding events in your music career so far?
I am very blessed to experience daily rewards in my musical career. I am continually touched, uplifted and humbled by witnessing the power of music at work – whether that’s a breakthrough in the expression of a vulnerable young person or a hospital patient discovering the benefits of singing for their breathing. It is such an enormous honour to share these moments with groups and individuals.
Professionally, recent events that have been very significant for me as an artist include:
Composing a piece for Road to Peace a film about the Dalai Lama and performing at the DVD Launch at Union Chapel in 2013,
Performing with the Barefoot Doctor and Tim Wheater at The Big Om in 2012
Performing Grey Lady Morning, a cover of Dave Evans song, at Ghosts in the Basement at Cecil Sharpe House in 2010
Participating in and organising mass choral events with Sing for Water, fundraising for WaterAid which demonstrate the powerful difference music can make in the world.
    3. Who would you say is your biggest influence?
On a personal level my Dad, who also sings and has always encouraged me to follow my creativity.
Artistically, Kate Bush is a great inspiration to me as a female artist who maintains her artistic and personal integrity.
    4. How important is faith or spirituality to your music?
For me, music is the embodiment of spirit – it allows us to communicate that which words cannot. We often describe people as singing with spirit because music allows us to express our most essential qualities. It is a bridge between the seen and unseen – enabling us to voice the unheard, to give expression to that which is deepest and dearest to us. Music making requires us to enter a creative state of sustained concentration where we become aware of our thoughts, feelings and sensations. As such it is a meditative practice which has a host of potentially healing and transformational effects. Singing and music making in groups brings people together and helps them to remember their connectedness. It’s a universal language which has the capacity to communicate across all known boundaries of faith, race, creed and culture. There are important historical instances where music has been used as a peaceful means of reconciliation and transformation – such as the Singing Revolution in Estonia which saw a non-violent liberation of the country from Russian Occupation in 1995 or Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern-Divan Orchestra which brings together Israeli and Arabic musicians. The word spirit originates from the Latin word to breathe or inspire – so when we sing, we literally breathe new life into ourselves, our communities and our world.
    5. What are your hopes or plans for the future in your music and/or personally?
My aim is always to be developing as an artist and facilitator so that I can make a positive contribution through music.
I love singing and I love helping other people sing – so I plan to continue enjoying singing with organisations such as Singing for Breathing at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital, Sing for Water and my own groups (HeartSong and Forest Hill Singing Group)
I am working on some exciting new composition projects at the moment, including a new album, which I look forward to sharing when they are ready.
Details of all forthcoming musical happenings can be found on my website. I also write bi-monthly articles and updates which are free for subscribers.
Generally I feel that music is a calling. It is a force that continually transforms my life, which means there are many wonderful surprises along the way – so I look forward to whatever comes next 

  26. Hello Aziz. I would love it if you would consider playing my music on your program! I am a master of the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). I have two CDs that I think would interest you. The first, “Shingetsu” is made up of traditional Zen Buddhist pieces and the second, “Moon” is improvised meditation music. You can here excerpts of both at these links: http://bronwynkirkpatrick.com/?page_id=240 http://bronwynkirkpatrick.com/?page_id=243

I would be happy to send you copies of these CDs if you are interested in including them in your program.

  35. Hi Mikhail,

Just reading your short essay on “Why Sacred music” at https://sacredmusicradio.org/why-sacred-music/

I wanted to pick up on your statement that “Jewish music excels in putting us in touch with pain and suffering and then transmuting them.”

That is a bit of a steriotype isn’t it? As though we Jews spend all our lives as suffering victims. I am not saying that there is not this in some Jewish sacred music – just it is much too narrow.

Jewish sacred music has traditionally been characterised by the unaccompanied (mostly) male voice (because of rules about not using musical instruments in syangogue or on the sabbath) though lately it has broadened into accompanied singing and music of modern religious musicians. It can be joyful, mouning, prayerful, rousing, awed, solemn, soulful, medatitive and more.

When I think of Jewish sacred music I think of the music of the Day of Atonement for example the “Kel Nora ‘Alila” of the Spanish and Portuguese (Sephardi) Jewish tradition – a prayer at the closing of the gates of the day of repentance, some of the Biblical psalms sung in Hebrew, some of the recently composed songs and prayers of Reb Shlomo Carlebach, the chants used for the Torah reading, or some of the modern sacred music coming out of Israel today – perhaps even “Al Kol Ele” sung by Naomi Shemer, the wordless “nigunim” or tunes of the Chasidim.

    Here are some links :

    Spanish & Portuguese choir http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhvdYthydMc
    Rabbi Dovid Zeller http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kD_zlDG–c
Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach (A Psalm sung to welcome the Sabbath)
My beloved teacher Rabbi Yehoshua Engleman’s largely original holy music: http://yehoshuaengelman.bandcamp.com

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHWmjncxfOU
Al Kol Ele http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbw2FTYHCTg (not Naomi Shemer singin but still quite nice)
    Torah chanting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E5XUe7z2Rg
Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs) http://torahreading.dafyomireview.com/cd.php?cdall=Shir_HaShirim

    Ilu Finu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1n5Y7gmlW0
…Or more musically but less decorously: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMwGEwU0dPA

(I am sure others more musical than me will have better ideas and probably better links)

Anyway my point is we are not all all suffering servants 🙂

Best wishes with the new web site – it is good –

    Jonathan

    1. Dear Jonathan.
Thanks for your excellent comments on my essay.
Unfortunately I am traveling and have not had the opportunity to listen to any of the links you have provided. I do look forward to the chance to do so. Let me just say that I know of no other sacred music tradition that can compare to the way that Jewish music is able to transmute suffering into joy. Shlomo especially; do you know for example his song “I heard the Stones of the Wall Crying? In saying that it excels in transmuting suffering into joy I did not mean in any way to say it lacked the other qualities you mention, just that this is a quality rarely found in the music of other traditions. Perhaps I am wrong. Do you know of comparable examples in other religious music?
      Sincerely yours – Mikhail Horowitz
